A new silverback has entered the jungle chat. Bakari, a 21-year-old male western lowland gorilla, is gradually settling into Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, where he is beginning his role as the leader of the family troop at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.

His arrival marks the start of a new era for the troop—and a meaningful moment after the loss of Gino, the beloved silverback who led the group for nearly three decades, dating back to the park’s opening.

A New Leader Takes His Place

Bakari is stepping into an important role. A troop’s dominant silverback helps guide and protect the family, maintaining a stable, cohesive group dynamic. Gorilla troops are built around strong family bonds, often with several females and their offspring centered around one dominant male.

Before arriving at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Bakari lived with a bachelor group at another Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo, where he socialized with other males. Moving into a family troop is natural for an adult male gorilla, but a new social dynamic cannot be rushed—especially when everyone involved happens to be very strong and very opinionated.

Slow Introductions, Stronger Bonds

Animal care experts are carefully guiding Bakari’s introduction to the females in the troop. The process begins with the gorillas seeing one another through a protected viewing area, giving them time to become familiar while experts closely watch their interactions.

As comfort grows, the introductions move forward step by step, eventually creating opportunities for touch and closer social contact. The deliberate pace helps Bakari feel secure in his new surroundings while allowing the group to build positive relationships over time.
