Soarin’ Takes Flight in a New Direction at Disneyland Resort
A Legacy of Lift-Off at Disneyland Resort
Disney Parks have always found ways to capture the feeling of flight. From the gentle rise of Dumbo the Flying Elephant to the rush of Peter Pan's Flight and the twists of Goofy's Sky School, that sensation has been part of the Disneyland Resort story for decades.
When Soarin' Over California debuted at Disney California Adventure Park, that feeling reached new heights, offering a stunning view of the Golden State below. Now, with Soarin' Across America taking flight on July 2, it's the perfect time to look back at how this fan-favorite attraction first got off the ground and how it keeps reaching new horizons.
Where It All Began: Soarin' Over California
Soarin' Over California opened in 2001 as part of the debut of Disney California Adventure Park, letting guests live out their dreams of flight. The journey introduced inspiring stories of aviation legends before guests boarded a flying machine designed to capture the feeling of hang gliding, complete with safety instructions from chief flight attendant Patrick.
One of the biggest challenges Imagineers faced was figuring out how to lift more than 80 guests at once toward an 80-foot domed screen. Ride engineer Mark Sumner found inspiration in an old Erector set from his attic, building a working model with toy nuts, bolts, and pulleys. That model eventually became the "lift-and-glide" system that defines the ride today.
Golden State Views Worth Soaring For
Soarin' Over California whisked guests past unforgettable sights: the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley vineyards dotted with hot air balloons, the sunset shores of Malibu, and even a golf drive from PGA West in the Palm Desert.
The journey moved from morning to night, passing Half Dome in Yosemite, snowy slopes in Lake Tahoe, the rugged coast of Point Lobos, and a nighttime flight through downtown Los Angeles. Scents and Jerry Goldsmith's original score rounded out the experience from the ride's debut on February 8, 2001.
A Few Fun Facts Worth Knowing
Before filming the horseback scene at Anza Borrego State Park, the production team brought in an archaeologist to assess the area and carefully preserve it. During that same sequence, the Thunderbirds took center stage, featuring then-lead pilot Lt. Col. Brian Bishop. Known as "Be-Bop," Bishop's appearance marked his final flight as squadron commander, adding a meaningful, real-world moment to the film.
Taking Flight Around the World
In 2016, Soarin' Around the World expanded the journey beyond California, taking flyers past global landmarks like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, and the icy peaks of the Matterhorn.
Destinations included:
- The Matterhorn (Swiss Alps)
- Greenland
- Sydney Harbour (Australia)
- Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany)
- Mount Kilimanjaro
- The Great Wall of China
- The Great Pyramids of Egypt
- Taj Mahal (India)
- Monument Valley (United States)
- Lau Island (Fiji)
- Iguazu Falls
- Eiffel Tower (France)
- Disneyland Resort (United States)
New footage, scents, and an updated score from composer Bruce Broughton, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road, brought each destination to life. Even with a global itinerary, the ride kept its signature sense of scale and movement.
The Next Chapter: Soarin' Across America
Soarin' Across America now takes flight, showcasing the United States from coast to coast in honor of the country's 250th anniversary. Highlights include the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore, alongside the return of the Wings of Fame and Legends of Flight exhibits honoring aviation icons like Earhart, Yeager, Banning, Lockheed, and Hughes.
The updated journey glides from the New England coastline to Grand Canyon West to an unforgettable view of New York Harbor, passing the great plains, northern wilderness, sunlit island shores, and the bayou along the way.
The production spanned more than 28,000 miles of travel, with nearly 900 helicopter passes and over 60 drone passes used to capture the new footage.
As Soarin' Across America debuts at Disney California Adventure and EPCOT, it marks a new chapter for an attraction that has always been about one thing: the simple joy of taking flight and seeing the world from a whole new perspective.
