Get ready to blast off on an upgraded mission!

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom is set to receive exciting new updates in 2025. The Tomorrowland favorite will introduce a brand-new character, redesigned ride vehicles, upgraded blasters, and more interactive gameplay features.

Meet “Buddy,” a New Star Command Character

The ride will now feature an all-new show scene starring Buddy, a cheerful support robot designed by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios. Buddy plays a key role in preparing guests for their journey, offering system checks, words of encouragement, and a chance to practice with new interactive targets before heading out to stop the Evil Emperor Zurg.

Upgraded Ride Vehicles Inspired by Star Command

The iconic star cruisers will debut a fresh design reflecting the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. These updated vehicles will also include built-in video monitors that display real-time scoring and additional features to enhance the competitive fun.

Enhanced Handheld Blasters for Sharper Aim

In a major gameplay upgrade, each vehicle will now be equipped with handheld blasters. These new devices are easier for younger guests to use and offer more precise aiming. Featuring always-on lasers, color variations for each cruiser, and added sound, light, and vibration effects, the blasters promise a more immersive experience for every Space Ranger on board.

Interactive Targets with Real-Time Reactions

The classic “Z” targets are being replaced with smart targets that react when hit. They light up on impact, offering instant feedback and introducing new possibilities for future gameplay innovations. These changes aim to make each mission more dynamic and rewarding.

Behind-the-Scenes Playtesting and What’s Next

Recent playtests involving Disney Imagineers helped fine-tune the new features. According to project creative director Justin DeTolla, the feedback was invaluable in shaping the final design. The ride will close temporarily this August to accommodate the upgrades and will reopen in 2026.
