Behind the Scenes: New Little Mermaid Show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Get ready to dive into the creative world of Disney Live Entertainment as they bring "The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure" to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios this fall. This brand-new theatrical production is a reimagining of the classic film, featuring all-new physical sets, puppets, live performers, and stunning visuals.
According to Sarah Schmidt, Creative Concept Artist & Illustrator for Disney Live Entertainment, the team has designed the production with a fresh collage style inspired by Ariel's room. This new approach has influenced every aspect of the show, from scenic design to puppetry and custom digital content.

To achieve this innovative blend of practical and projected scenic design, as well as real and digital puppetry, the team is utilizing a combination of traditional techniques like blacklight puppets alongside cutting-edge technology such as motion capture. Show Director James Silson explained that they are using motion capture technology to translate live performers' movements into digital animations, bringing characters like King Triton, Ursula, and Ariel's sisters to life on stage in a visually stunning manner.

The production aims to seamlessly integrate digital imagery with live performances, blurring the line between real and digital. Viewers can expect to see large physical set pieces interacting with digital environments, digital puppets transforming into real ones, and animated characters sharing the stage with live actors. According to James, the result will be nothing short of magical.
