Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent Digs Up New Details

The latest Indiana Jones expedition is heading deep beneath Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park—and this particular temple has bats, scorpions, fire, snakes and one very inconvenient portal to the Underworld.

On August 15, 2026, during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa, Disney unearthed new details for Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, the upcoming attraction at Walt Disney World Resort.

Harrison Ford Steps Into the Temple

Disney Legend Harrison Ford will serve as the actual model for the attraction’s Indiana Jones animatronic. It marks the first time Ford’s likeness will appear in a Disney attraction anywhere in the world—a fittingly major discovery for an archaeologist with a talent for finding trouble.

A Temple Adventure With Animal Kingdom Roots

Imagineers are blending the high-stakes spirit of a classic Indiana Jones adventure with the cultural detail central to Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a park devoted to creatures both real and imagined.

The journey takes riders alongside Indy beneath an ancient temple ruin, where Maya culture and its profound connection to nature shape the setting and story.

The Legend Beneath the Cenote

Inside the temple, adventurers will rendezvous with Dr. Jones as he explores a mysterious site near a cenote, a once water-filled underground cave. According to local legend, its passageway leads straight to the Maya Underworld—and a serpentine creature called the Tsukán protects the route.

Then comes the part where a nice archaeological visit becomes considerably less relaxing: riders are unwittingly pulled through a portal into the Underworld. The escape route includes monstrous bats, larger-than-life scorpions, fire, flame and, naturally, snakes. Indiana Jones adventures have never been known for their sensible footwear requirements.

An Expedition Worth Watching

Disney has now revealed the attraction’s cultural inspiration, story and first major character detail, giving future Animal Kingdom adventurers a clearer look at the peril waiting below the temple floor. The jade serpent, it seems, is not interested in playing hide-and-seek.
