A 15-Day Journey Through Costa Rica and Panama

The new Epic Costa Rica and Panama itinerary stretches across 15 days, linking Panama and Costa Rica by way of the Panama Canal, wildlife-rich waterways, tropical forests, volcanic highlands and remote Pacific islands.

Days on expedition can include Zodiac cruises, paddling in sheltered bays and walks along forest trails. Snorkeling awaits in the waters of Coiba National Park, while the Osa Peninsula brings opportunities to spot monkeys and tropical birds. In Costa Rica, travelers can hike among the geothermal landscapes of Rincón de la Vieja.

Expert naturalists help unpack the ecosystems and wildlife encountered along the route. Visits with local families, plus experiences focused on artistic traditions and conservation efforts, add cultural context to a journey with plenty of wild edges.

Guanacaste Gets Two Ways to Explore

Exploring Costa Rica: Guanacaste, Santa Rosa and Rincon de la Vieja returns with a choice of six- and eight-day itineraries for 2028–2029. The update gives travelers more flexibility to explore northern Costa Rica, from its volcanic highlands to its rugged Pacific shoreline.

Guanacaste’s tropical dry forests are laced with rivers and home to monkeys, iguanas and colorful birdlife. The itinerary combines hikes in Rincón de la Vieja National Park with Zodiac and kayak explorations of protected waters, secluded bays and rocky shores shaped by ancient volcanic forces.

Beyond the wildlife, the journey spotlights a province known for its ranching traditions and warm hospitality. It is a compact Costa Rica escape with a surprisingly big sense of place.

Panama, From Canal Locks to Coral Reefs

The Panama Canal, Pearl Islands and Darien Jungle has also been updated for the new season. This remains National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ only Central American itinerary that travels entirely within Panama, connecting the country’s celebrated engineering marvel with its rainforests, reefs, wildlife and cultural history.

Aboard the National Geographic Quest, travelers transit the historic Panama Canal by both day and night. The expedition also visits local communities and two UNESCO World Heritage sites while exploring Panama’s indigenous and colonial history.

Expect lush rainforest, a wildlife refuge and an important national park, with monkeys, iguanas and tropical birds appearing along the way. Beneath the turquoise waterline, pristine coral reefs shelter colorful marine life for snorkeling adventures. Panama may be famous for its canal, but this itinerary makes sure the rest of the country gets its curtain call, too.
