During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event presented by Visa, Disney shared fresh details about Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent, the new attraction coming to Walt Disney World Resort. The newly revealed adventure sends riders alongside Indy into a temple with a mysterious cenote, a gateway to the Maya Underworld and—because this is Indiana Jones—a very poor reputation for staying safe.

Harrison Ford Steps Into the Temple

Disney Legend Harrison Ford will serve as the actual model for the attraction’s next Indiana Jones animatronic. It marks the first time Ford’s likeness will appear in a Disney attraction anywhere in the world.

That means this particular archaeological assignment comes with an especially familiar face leading the way.

A Temple Rooted in Nature and Legend

Imagineers are blending the big-screen thrills of an Indiana Jones adventure with the cultural detail that fits Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a park devoted to creatures both real and imagined.

The journey will take riders beneath an ancient temple ruin inspired by Maya culture and its profound connection to nature. It is a setting built for secrets, symbolism and the sort of warning signs that Indy has never been especially inclined to heed.

The Cenote Has Other Plans

The story begins with adventurers meeting Dr. Jones as he explores a mysterious temple near a once water-filled underground cave known as a cenote. According to local legend, its passageway leads directly to the Maya Underworld—and a serpentine creature called the Tsukán protects the route.

Things take a sharp turn when riders are unwittingly pulled through a portal to the Underworld. The escape route includes monstrous bats, larger-than-life scorpions, fire, flame and, naturally, snakes. A calm museum tour, this is not.

More Clues, More Questions

Disney has now revealed the attraction’s cultural inspiration, storyline and the dangers waiting inside the temple. Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent is coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park at Walt Disney World Resort, with Indy’s latest discovery already looking like one treasure chest best opened with caution.
